Learn about Type 1

Newly Diagnosed ? See our Starter Kit

With funding from the Federal Government's Department of Health and Ageing, we have developed a 40-page book for Adults who are newly-diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.

The resource has been critically reviewed and endorsed for clinical accuracy by 30 diabetes-specialist health care professionals from around Australia. As of October 2006, 224 diabetes centres and specialist practices are using the Kits to work with their newly-diagnosed patients.

The original funding only allowed for a limited number of kits to be printed in 2004. Abbott Diabetes Care are now supporting the printing and distribution of the Starter Kit. It remains free of charge.

Pregnancy with Type 1 Diabetes

A fabulous resource for women who are pregnant or planning a pregnancy

JakePenny.JPG

Penny, one of more than 20 women with diabetes involved in the project, really knew her topic while helping Reality Check review a new pregnancy resource late last year.

Amongst the comments made on each draft, the editors also learnt of Penny's growing belly, and eventually the arrival of beautiful Jake.

Alcohol

Can I or Can't I ?

In a person with insulin-dependent diabetes, alcohol has two potentially problematic effects:

GI Factor

Dr. Jennie Brand-Miller is a co-developer of the Glycemic Index, a dietary system used by many people with diabetes as well as athletes and others needing to closely monitor their eating. As a researcher in dietetics at the University of Sydney, Dr. Brand-Miller has published widely on this theory.

Recently, a program has been introduced into Australia where symbols appear on some food products in supermarkets to indicate whether they are "High GI" i.e. raise the blood glucose levels quickly or "Low GI" i.e. provide a slow and steady rise to the blood glucose levels. The GI is being used in Canada, Britain, Sweden, Italy, Germany, South Africa, New Zealand but I think the Aussies are ahead!
